Reader Design: Monika's Hygge Home

We're off to the birthplace of StyleMutt Home - also our nation's capital - to tour Monika's home for today's feature. This simple but cozy family home evokes all the feelings associated with the Danish concept of hygge that we've come to know and love. I myself am a major fan of Denmark (fun fact: I've visited three times and have plans to return as often as possible), and Monika's space would fit perfectly with the chic apartments of Copenhagen.

Let's take a look!

From Monika:

We strongly believe in atmosphere at home when everyone should feel comfortable and cozy. Light is one of the factors that make the room calm and peaceful, and it is so important to me to create relaxing and loving mood. I am inspired by “hygge” which is how I used to live when I was growing up. To me, that means a house full of laughter, homemade cake, and coziness.

In design, I follow my inner creativity and decorate with whatever works for my family rather than follow one style. I am drawn to clean lines and all mid-century pieces that remind me about my parents house. We used inherited elements and priceless-to-us family heirlooms that are from all over the world and represent a few different styles.

The combination of family pieces, vintage finds, and mid-century West Elm items creates a home that promotes togetherness and relaxation. Each room has something that makes it special and different, but the entire home speaks the same language.

Monika, thank you so much for showing us around! Follow Monika along on Instagram @zigzagstudio for more.

See you in a few weeks, Mutts!

Reader Design: Angela's Authentic Space

Yesterday was International Women's Day, and today, we're all about praising authenticity, love, and strength in this powerful StyleMutt community. Angela, who is hosting us in her home today, is a perfect example of all three of those things. This home for six plus her dog is a clear labor of love.

From Angela:

I’m not sure if I really have a specific style. I just buy what I like. But it could probably be described as a little midcentury modern, a little boho, and a little Scandinavian. I aim for all of the rooms to flow together and feel cohesive.

My goal for this house is for it to feel comfortable and to be a haven for us to relax and unwind. We are very informal, and the majority of items in our house are thrift or clearance finds. I never want our kids or guests to feel like they can’t touch something.

Our living room is our main hangout place..we have fires in the winter. The kids play piano and my husband plays guitar, and most nights we are having a dance party to our favorite songs on our Alexa.

The dresser in our living room is one of my favorite pieces. I found it on the Facebook Market place for $25! We keep games, audio books, art supplies, and of course play-doh in the drawers.

Function is absolutely key for this family, and Angela has made small changes to improve life from day-to-day. An example?

Another goal of mine is for our house to be completely functional and realistic for our family. We turned our front entry coat closet into an office nook this last summer. We now each keep our coats and shoes in our own bedroom closets. It’s a lot less clutter, and this space is much more functional now.

Angela's use of neutrals and plants makes the home a place her entire family can look forward to spending time in. It's clear this family loves to be together, because they've created a space that reflects their personalities and their values.

Meet StyleMutt Home's NEW Design Assistant!

Hi Friends! We are THRILLED to introduce you to StyleMutt Home's newest team member, Joy Lewis! When we started the process of bringing on a design assistant to our team, we were completely humbled by the response. The turn out of passion and talent far exceeded our expectations, but we just kept coming back to Joy through each phase of the process. After meeting her it was the feeling I needed to have; total peace. She is someone that makes this growing process feel like the most natural thing in the world and she has already slid right in and taken on her first job, (with our first Australian client, nonetheless)!

It's such a delight to celebrate bringing Joy on our team with you today!

Joy has an impressive portfolio of projects under her belt that includes both her own home as well as corporate and private clients. We thought it might be a fun way of getting to know her better if we shared a few snippets of her past work!

Joy has the impressive skill of refinishing furniture to suit the style of the project at hand - this sweet storage cabinet was refinished by her hand and we are just smitten with her attention to detail, from color choice to the styling!

Joy and her husband tackled their own kitchen renovation recently and turned it into a functional, family friendly space that still maintains the character of their home.

The following are just a couple furniture makeover projects Joy has done. Isn't that ottoman the sweetest?!

Please join us in welcoming Joy to the StyleMutt Home team! We couldn't be more excited to have this sweet and talented lady on board with us. She truly is an answered prayer and the way she's jumped right in and gotten down to work in the brief time since she's started has already blessed our business in various ways.

We look forward to sharing the work that Joy is doing for StyleMutt Home as her projects progress! If you would like to see more of her previous work we invite you to head over to her site, Joy Lewis Design!

Thank you all so much for coming by!
