Reader Design: Janet's Smart Sophisticated Style

Answer me this: what is better than a Friday?

How ‘bout a Friday Feature Reader Design!

Today’s #stylemuttspaces feature is Janet from Style to Move Blog and she is one savvy sophisticated homemaker.  Based just north of Toronto, Janet has managed to pull off a restoration hardware look without restoration hardware prices.  I mean just look at the perfect shades of flint gray, organic accents, and monochromatic genius!

From Janet:

I moved into this new home about five years ago with my husband and two kids (now teenagers).  This was a bit of a shock to us because we had only lived in century homes full of character and charm.  The real challenge has been how to give it some character and put our mark on it.
This is our family room which is off the kitchen so it gets lots of use.  We had a lot of stress prior to moving here, so it was important that this home was calm.  Therefore, we wanted a calm color scheme and no clutter.  The book shelves (previously in our office) and the coffee table (previously a table) were painted a soft grey.  I also turned the books paper side out to fit the color scheme and to add to the calm in the room.
I always like to mix ferns and woven baskets in my spaces because they add a relaxed sophistication.  I'm also eclectic, so I like all styles.

You’ve certainly found your kinfolk here Janet – eclectic is just a synonym for StyleMutt ;)

The side bar was actually an island in my previous house. Here, I added some baskets underneath and painted it an almost black, giving it a farmhouse feel.  Nothing in this room was overly expensive.  Most things came from either a big box store, HomeSense or Ikea.  Even the rug is two small inexpensive rugs put together.

So smart painting it a "almost black."  Painting pieces a matte black or a charcoal gray softens the harshness the a black piece can give to a room, making it feel more rustic while still providing a rich tone.  I told ya she was a savvy lady...

Thank you Janet for sharing such a smartly put-together living room with us on StyleMutt Home.  You can follow Janet @styletomoveblog on Instagram for more of her savvy finds!

Reader Design: Summer's Coastal Inspired Bungalow

Hi Friends! You know what's one of my favorite things about this time of year? Evening walks. And my favorite part of evening walks? Snooping around pretty homes! When you see a home that looks warm and inviting from the outside, you've just gotta see the inside! I've gone so far as to walk up driveways for a better peek, but am still working up the courage to just give a swift knock and ask for a quick tour. (My husband would NEVER support this hah!)

Here is such a house I would definitely ask for a tour if I were passing it by on the street. And lucky for all of us, we're getting one today!

Summer, from Simple Stylings, has created the sweetest, coziest little home for her and her family in Charlotte, NC. With an affinity for coastal elements, there is a relaxed, 'come and stay awhile' vibe.

From Summer:

We live right outside of Charlotte, NC in a small and cozy three bedroom, two bath bungalow. Sometimes I wish I had a bigger, better space but I love our 1500 square foot home so much especially because of all the blood sweat and tears we’ve put into it.
One of my favorite parts of our home is our outdoor spaces. Although tiny, we have a great front porch and last year my dad built us a beautiful back deck perfect for hanging out and entertaining. Aren’t Dad’s the best?!
I also have a deep love for the coast which definitely plays a roll in almost every room. You’ll find lots of seagrass, clam shell bowls and capiz shells around here with blues, greens, white and tan as the back drop. I love cozy slipcovered pieces and painted furniture with some beautiful wood thrown in the mix.
I love that my home is part of my job and deep down I think I enjoy the chaos of having three or four projects going on all at the same time. I grew up nearby and my parents have bought and sold many homes which has fueled my love for decorating and design.

Can you believe this is Summer's closet? Lovin' that large scale pattern on the wall. Gooorgeous!

Currently we have a top secret kitchen project in the works as well as some living room updates! My son’s playroom has also fallen victim to my need for change and will be revealed soon. I would love for your guys to come by for a virtual visit (and literally too if your in the Charlotte area!). Thanks again for having me!

Well, Summer, the pleasure has certainly been ours! We will definitely be stalking your blog for that kitchen reveal! If you'd like to follow Summer's daily decorating adventures, you can check her out on Instagram @simplestylingsblog.

DC Apartment - Bedroom Source List

Hi Friends! Back to share the rest of the sources from our recent DC apartment design project! Finishing up our curated list in the bedroom today, and since we're all friends here, I must admit that this room made me teary eyed when we were finished!

We started with just a color scheme, which was declared by 'Lilith' to the left here - our client's most treasured piece of art. As this room evolved through carefully and thoughtfully picking out every little detail, we were somewhat taken aback when we were done! We knew it would be a special space, but nailing a 'feeling' that a client is seeking is somewhat nerveracking, as we realized. Everyone responds differently to different styles! So, when we stood back when all was hung and done, we knew we'd nailed the feeling Christine had desired. And what fun we had doing it, to boot!

So let's look back over the details of this room, shall we?!

Bedroom sources:

1. Rug - Rugs USA; Kas Oriental Amore Meridian Rug
2. Ivory coverlette - West Elm; Braided Quilt
3. X-Base Stools - Target; Threshold X-Stool
4. Ivory Throw Blanket - IKEA

2. Faux Sheepskin Pillows - Pottery Barn
3. Kilim Pillow - VillagePillow, (no longer on Etsy, similar item here)
4. Gold + White Clip Lamps - IKEA
5. Peachy Pink Sheets - Wayfair

1. Desk stool - Target
2. Desk brackets - IKEA

*The mirror is a piece passed down to our client from a beloved family member, and the dresser we thrifted and refinished in Pure White by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

In case you missed our living room source list, hop over here. We'll be following up soon with a few of the DIY projects we used to give Christine a personalized, custom space, but that's all our sources! Feel free to ask any questions you may have that we didn't cover!

Thank you all for stopping by!
