Brass Hanging Planters || 2018 Flip List Item No.5

If you've been following us for a while then you've probably heard me talk about my annual Furniture Flip Bucket List and for those of you who aren't in the loop - it's basically a declaration of what I'd like to accomplish each year.  Well my friends, this post is about crossing one of those items off this years list plus crossing a secret bucket list item off as well.

Ok so before we get to item No.5: Hanging Planter, we need to talk about a dresser - what else?

I recently saw this 5-drawer beauty on Facebook and picked it up with a very particular plan in mind - I wanted to straight up copy Chelsea's take on this piece:

Ok.  So I admit that I have tried to copy her once before when I refinished this piece but struck out when I found the base was made with two different types of wood that I had to stain in order to match.  So when I brought this tallboy home, sanding the legs was like scratching a winning lotto ticket.

Finally, I could cross this secret bucket list item off: refinish a piece in a green and bare wood two-tone!

It's no secret that this green is our favorite.

Oh you dark and moody minx!  How your velvety emerald make my heart pitter-patter especially contrasted against those buttery naked tapered legs.

The five drawers make for lots of storage.

For styling, I deployed my favorite terra-cotta touch. 

And, of course, the bucket list hanging planters!

These were surprisingly simple to make - start with some shallow brass bowls and two brass macramé hoops:

Supplies

Brass Bowls + Macramé Hoops

Flip the bowls upside down and brace the brass rings between to pieces of wood allowing the ring to rest on the bottom of the bowls.

Step No.1

Position Upside Down

Apply a bead of super glue epoxy that's rated for bonding metal and dries clear.

Step No.2

Apply Glue 

Allow it to dry for the recommended length of time to ensure they will be able to bear weight when flipped right-side up.

Step No.3

Let Dry

Tie a string to the top of the ring then I fill with your favorite plant babies.

Step No.4

Hang with String + Fill with Plants

Reader Design: Kendra's Gathering Spot

We're off to Texas today, mutts! Kendra is a musician, photographer, and superb community maker. It all starts with her own home in Houston, Texas, which she shares with her husband.

From Kendra:

“My husband and I are big on community, so we wanted our space to be one that is not only cozy and inviting but also one that allows us to intentionally cultivate our growing community. An open floor plan, gathering spaces, and a large dining table were must-haves for us. I’m also a musician and creative, and I want the space I live (and sometimes work) in to be aesthetically beautiful, inspiring, and creatively inviting.”

“We bought our house one year ago in June and, before that, I wasn’t super passionate about design nor did I know what i really liked. In the last year I’ve learned more about myself through my design style, and it’s turned into a hobby as well as a passion. I love being able to express myself in my own space. When friends, family, and even strangers come over to our house, I feel like they are getting a glimpse into my soul just by seeing how I’ve designed each space, and the attention I give to even the smallest of details. It’s truly special to be able to make a house a home.”

Part of the design process has included some self-realization on what styles and trends are truly authentic to Kendra's soul; and like most things in adult life, it took a bit of trail and error.

“I would describe my style as a touch of bohemian meets mid-century modern with ALOT of plants. I love the layers of clean-lined, mid-century modern furniture mixed with the elegance, nostalgia, and texture of hand-made items, hand-me-downs, and thrift finds. I think it unintentionally has a desert/western feel.

I think the whole “mid-century modern” trend was a struggle at first. It’s so fun and unique, and i see it EVERYWHERE so that caused some initial hesitation. When we first got married and moved into our first apartment together, I went all out on a specific design style that I completely grew out of a year later (So much regret). In order that I don’t make that mistake again, I keep that in the back of my mind when I’m making big style decisions. I want to be able to keep up with trends, but also make smart design choices that I know and believe will outlast a trend and not break my bank every year! ”

A sure-fire a way to gracefully sidestep trends is to stick to what you know. And what your family has known for years before.

“The piano was passed down to us from my husbands grandma and grandpa and inside the bench seat holds many original songs written by Steven’s grandmother and vintage piano lesson books.”

Each room has a special something that makes them interesting and different. The one common denominator? I bet you can guess now that you've seen Kendra's home.

“PLANTS! I Keep a fairly minimal color scheme, so I absolutely love the vibrance, color, and life that plants bring to a space. It’s a constant learning curve because you never know how a plant will survive in one space versus another, but I love the challenge and the accomplishment that comes from helping a plant thrive in a space. My mom always had plants in our homes growing up, so it’s something that we can connect on and a hobby that was passed down from her to me. ”

Wood Pulls Dresser

Meet the new workshop.  It’s pretty much the same as the whole workshop - but it's the main reason for my blog radio silence for the last 2 months.  Since April, Caleb and I have been in the throes of moving into a new rental townhouse (pics of that to come I promise!).  Besides the usual packing/ unpacking, we've been putting a lot of sweat equity into the new place (huge shout-out to my paint crew AKA Chelsea and fam!) which has also entailed aking a crash course in drywall to transform the unfinished garage into a suitable new workspace.  

Finally, we’ve got most of the major projects done and I can start accumulating inventory again - starting with this one!

I asked you on Instagram if I should paint or restore and got mixed results so the people pleaser that I am, I decided to do both ;)

Sometimes I can’t bring myself to paint beautiful wood that’s still in good condition.

So instead I re-oiled the drawer fronts and did my new favorite take on two-tone and painted the outer surfaces.

Yes you called it - I used my favorite “Black Boudoir” by Behr yet again.  I mean just look at how moody and inky these other pieces turned out?!? It’s hard not to like.

This extra-long beast has sx drawers and a cabinet in the center with three shelves.

The interior shelving make it an ideal media center or TV stand because you can simply close the cabinet door when you want to hide your electronics.

I had a hard time deciding what to do with the knob on the center cabinet door.  The original pull was a fancy floret and read a little too traditional.  After a quick poll on social media, I decided to go with the clear winner - an antique brass knob that has similar contemporary lines to the unique wood pulls on the drawers.  

I'm in love with the organic lines of the pulls and the Mid Century Modern tapered legs!

This piece’s styling is brought to you by my dad’s vintage record collection (which heavily favors Bruce Springsteen I might add).

And for a touch of brass - my favorite little “pocket change” tray.
