Cantilever Chairs || Plus a Dining Room Reveal!

Today is the day.  I finally have a room in our new place to share: our dining room!

3. Dining Before, Tan.jpg

Ok so it didn’t look like much when we moved in.  Basically three things had to happen to get us to this reveal day:

1) The dining room HAD to be painted something a little less light-sucking
2) We needed to find some chairs - because what is a dining room without chairs amiright?
3) I needed to decide what art to feature in here!

We (I mean er my familial paint crew - thanks again guys!) knocked out the painting on week one but finding some chairs that could really make a statement was proving more difficult.  But eventually, I found them:

Brass... Breuer... CANE... Cantilever chairs.

Up until I found these, I didn't even know Marcel Breuer chairs came in anything but chrome.  But when I saw these glittering gold chairs, I scooped them up - carrying two at a time through the maze of dusty furniture at the thrift store, slightly panicked that the other two wouldn't still be there while the check-out clerk waited for me to navigate them safely out.

My original plan was to flip and sell them. But I wasn't sure what direction to take them in.  My gut wanted me to recover the seats in leather but I was having some doubts.  Between the warm cane and bright brass, I feared that richly-toned leather would stick out like a sore thumb.  It needed something to tie it all together.

I sought council from my favorite sounding board Chelsea.  She actually suggested a soft, light velvet instead - wouldn't that be lovely?!  But after more research at the fabric store, I realized velvet was out of my price range.  Plus, I already had some yardage of leather in black and didn't want that to go to waste - but what could I do to marry the look?

Eventually, I landed on adding an unexpected touch of black on the back of the cane.  Suddenly, this discreet black lip is what I needed to realize I was in love!  Alrighty - let's see it all together shall we?

Ah the paint color already makes a WORLD of difference in this space.

And these chairs are the stuff my dreams are made of!

Can you see the touch of black on the inside lip?

At certain angles it even peaks through the cane.

It’s funny to me that rooms with molding used to always read really "traditional" to me.  But when we toured this rental, it was the idea of making this space a fresh take on traditional is what sold me on this house in the first place - despite the dingy tan walls.

As for the art, I tried hanging all sorts of arrangements in this dining nook and was despondent to all of them.  I had wanted something long and low to lean a cluster of art on but the dining room didn't have space for a buffet or credenza.  But when I hung the art low and along the chair rail I realized it created the same effect that I love without the added furniture footprint!

Even though they were originally supposed to be for sale, once I brought them in around our table - I was done.  These babies were mine.  And the perfect crowning jewel to our freshly finished space.  Hoping to have more of our new place to share over the coming months so stay tuned friends!

Brass Hanging Planters || 2018 Flip List Item No.5

If you've been following us for a while then you've probably heard me talk about my annual Furniture Flip Bucket List and for those of you who aren't in the loop - it's basically a declaration of what I'd like to accomplish each year.  Well my friends, this post is about crossing one of those items off this years list plus crossing a secret bucket list item off as well.

Ok so before we get to item No.5: Hanging Planter, we need to talk about a dresser - what else?

I recently saw this 5-drawer beauty on Facebook and picked it up with a very particular plan in mind - I wanted to straight up copy Chelsea's take on this piece:

Mid Century in 'Scholar Green'

January 2017

Ok.  So I admit that I have tried to copy her once before when I refinished this piece but struck out when I found the base was made with two different types of wood that I had to stain in order to match.  So when I brought this tallboy home, sanding the legs was like scratching a winning lotto ticket.

Finally, I could cross this secret bucket list item off: refinish a piece in a green and bare wood two-tone!

It's no secret that this green is our favorite.

Oh you dark and moody minx!  How your velvety emerald make my heart pitter-patter especially contrasted against those buttery naked tapered legs.

The five drawers make for lots of storage.

For styling, I deployed my favorite terra-cotta touch.

And, of course, the bucket list hanging planters!

These were surprisingly simple to make - start with some shallow brass bowls and two brass macramé hoops:

Brass Bowls + Macramé Hoops

Flip the bowls upside down and brace the brass rings between to pieces of wood allowing the ring to rest on the bottom of the bowls.

Step No.2

Apply Glue

Allow it to dry for the recommended length of time to ensure they will be able to bear weight when flipped right-side up.

Step No.3

Let Dry

Tie a string to the top of the ring then I fill with your favorite plant babies.

Four down, Three to go.  Catch up on the 2018 Furniture Flip Bucket List:

Copycat Greige MCM Tallboy

One of the best things about working with Chelsea is her impeccable eye.  She's always on the lookout for good pieces that could really make a magical moment for a potential client - even scouting used unique pieces to get our clients the best deals.  And sometimes, she finds the most amazing mid-century modern tallboy for an unreal price at the thrift store and not only buys it for you, but throws it in her minivan and drops it off at your workshop so you have a new piece to play with...

IMG_2578.JPG

SAAAY WHAT?!?!  Thanks boo!  And to top it all off, she even gave me the idea to go griege again.  Chelsea, I guess you could say you're my muse ;)

DSC04036.jpg

After custom-mixing a greige to refinish this piece from 2016, I have been kicking myself for not color matching the mix for future projects.

Gray MCM Tallboy

December 2016

I decided to try out Silver Drop by Behr Paint and found it to be a close match in warm undertones but definitely a lighter shade.

DSC04064.jpg

The piece features its original round tapered legs.  I originally thought I would paint them to complete the copycat look but once I started on this piece, I couldn't bring myself to.

DSC04042.jpg

I decided to also keep the original knobs but switched out the bar pulls for brass buckle-style ones I repurposed from another piece.

DSC04068.jpg

Do you recognize them?

IMG_4028.JPG

I actually bought that other piece because of those pulls but once I got my hands on it, realized the body wasn't even worth saving.  So I kept the hardware and repurposed the drawers in an unconventional industrial shelving unit.  These pulls remind me of that scene from "PS I Love You" where she flings the belt buckle across the room and discovers she wants to design shoes - ha!

DSC04071.jpg

For styling I had some help from Spring (who finally decided to show up) and Mela Artisans who have some beautiful flat weave rugs...

DSC04055.jpg

...and these EPIC cutting boards in unusual shapes!
